Meet this Illustrator: John Singer Sargent

Since I mentioned Sargent in this post, I think it´s only fair to better present him.

Sargent (1856 - 1925) is considered the best American portrait painter of his generation, it worth a note about his nationality. He is the son of American parents, but he was born in Italy, lived in Europe and died in England.

Sargent was famous for his oil paintings, but also painted many watercolors.

As always in painting, you will notice is the quality of contrast in his work, as it was usual, he worked many times with dark backgrounds, giving great emphasis on the illuminated faces.

One thing I like about Singer is that, even being a naturalist painter with great attention to detail, you notice a stylization in his work. In several paints you see the option for straight cuts and simplifications. In the colours he also held the hiperdetalhismo on the faces and solved simply and elegantly the clothes.

Sargent is a invaluable reference and evereybody who paints every now or then end up doing a reinterpretation of his work.

Below, there is some paintings that I find very beautiful, and two drawings (I like very much to see the drawing of the painters, they have very curious of choices of lines and masses).

It also has a photo of Sargent in his studio to give some idea of the scale of the paintings he did.

Look how he solve the clothes in a simple and elegant way.

Look the outline of this face, see the straight lines and beautifully stylized outlines?
